We all read different books. Then we started writing down things that happened in the book on a piece of paper. Then we put three good things that happened in the book and three bad things that happened. We needed 3 good things and 2 bad things to include on the board game. Then we had to do a little practice game on a rough draft. We wrote on spaces whether you had to move forward or go back spaces. On our final copy, we colored them, glued them in file folders and wrote letters. Then we laminated them and got to play them. We donated them to Inner City Youth Opportunities, where children go after school for tutoring and other programs. It was fun because we got to help other people.

Last week we harvested all our vegetables from our school garden! The Second Graders grew corn, lima beans, carrots, tomatoes, and onions. Other classes had different vegetables including lettuce, peppers, beans, zucchini and flowers. We used these vegetables to make soup and salad for a special Soup and Salad night at school! We raised money at the Soup and Salad night to give to students in Sierra Leone, Africa to buy new computers for their school. We raised $1,900, which is enough to buy 8 computers for their school! We felt good about doing this because we know we are helping them. We also planted lettuce and radishes this week, to grow for a Farmer's Market in the fall. We can raise more money for the students in Sierra Leone then! Questions for our Readers: (Remember, first names only and no personal information like your last name, address, phone number, or future plans!)
Do you like vegetables? Which one is your favorite? Have you ever helped someone, and how did you feel doing it? Have you ever raised money in a fundraiser? What did you do to raise money? This morning we had the "Grow-Breaking" Ceremony for our Vermont School Garden! The whole school met outside, along with parents. Because we are using the harvest from our garden to help support the Empowering Children and Youths School in Sierra Leone, Africa, we even skyped them into the ceremony! Every class planted a wish stick with a wish that we have for the school. The whole school sang "Let it Grow" from the movie The Lorax. Mr. Knepp did the ceremonial dig and planted a seed. The fourth graders read a poem, and then the school in Sierra Leone sang a song that they wrote to thank us! It was a great ceremony! Below you can see pictures from today and watch an amazing video Mrs. Overn put together that chronicles the planning and creation of our garden this year. Watch for our class! We had so much fun with this project! Every student received a book to read last week. After reading, they made a list of 5 or more events that happened in the story and listed them in order. Then they decided if the events were "good" or "bad" to figure out if it would be a MOVE AHEAD space or LOSE A TURN space. Once the planning was done, we created board games to go with each book! We are donating the books and board games to a local children's charity, Inner City Youth Opportunities (ICYO). We thought this was a great way to give back to children who don't have books to read and games to play each day.
What have you done to help others in need? What is your favorite book or board game? Today was a special day for us--we had an ice cream party! More important though, we celebrated our generosity for those less fortunate children in Guatemala who started school for the first time. Between our 23 students, we donated 534 books, hats and stuffed animals to bring smiles to children's faces many, many miles away from us. Mrs. Pat Lehman, the organizer of the fundraiser and one of the people responsible for opening this new school, shared some pictures and stories from her trip to Guatemala that we viewed during the ice cream party. She gave us a glimpse into the daily lives of these children. This slideshow has pictures from the planning meetings for the school's opening, as well as the opening day! This holiday season, our class, along with Mrs. Lance's class, worked on a service project together. We ordered books from Scholastic using points we earned from previous book orders. Each student was given a book to read. After reading the book, they created board games about the book, including main events and illustrations from the story. We laminated these board games, along with cover letters about the book and their favorite parts. Then we donated the books and games to The Healing Center in Cincinnati for children to use when they are there! The activity was a huge success, and the students were so proud of their work!
